Fallen at the first hurdle! It was one of a batch built in 1927 - but 41947 is
clearly a LT&SR atlantic tank, well away from its home ground at Toton.
Ex-Midland Railway 41531 was built in 1907 - designed by Deeley, better
known for his compounds. Staveley (Barrow Hill) shed
Here's one of those rather nice little half-cab 0-6-0Ts which the Midland built.
No 41844 is no longer with us, but class-mate 41708 survived. Kirkby in
Ashfield shed 12 May 1962
49007 is an ex-LNWR G2A, seen at Wigan.. Close relative G2 no. 49395 is still
with us
Ex-L&Y 50850 was one of the very last of its class in service, seen on station
pilot duties at Bolton Trinity Street. Classmate 1008 is preserved
Perhaps the saddest picture in this section. Ex-HR 4-4-0 "Ben Alder", BR
54398, was set aside for possible preservation in 1953, but scrapped in the mid
60s. Dawsholm
54491 was a Pickersgill 4-4-0 for the Caledonian Railway - seen here a little off
its former tracks at Thurso
Ex-CR 0-4-4T 55173 prepares to move the stock into the platform at Connel
Ferry for the mid-day departure to Ballachulish 9 Sept. 1960 Classmate 55189
survived, preserved as no. 419 at Bo'ness
LMS part 2 - pre-grouping classes
More Caley steam - 56031 is seen with its wooden tender; 54497 looks on at
Greenock (Ladyburn)
56169 was built as a dock shunter for the Caledonian Railway. St Rollox, 3
April 1961
Ex-CR 57350, seen at St Rollox, is a Drummond "Standard Goods"...
...and 57550 was a McIntosh "812" - in fact it was no 812, first of the class,
seen at North Leith station. No 828 has been preserved, residing on the
Strathspey Railway after several years in the museum at Glasgow
Another survivor - 52044 was the last of Barton-Wrights 0-6-0s in service (seen
here at Wakefield shed) and lives on the Worth Valley Railway
Aspinall's 27 class followed two years later, in 1889. 75 were still in service in
1959, including 52207; one is preserved, no. 52322, on the East Lancs
Railway. Lees (Oldham) shed, 20 May 1960
58086 was an ex-Midland Railway 0-4-4T (providing the basis for Stanier's later
design on the previous page). Bath Green Park
58131 was a member of a Midland class dating from 1875. Seen at Kentish
Town
Lastly, and another survivor, ex-North London Railway no 58850, last of a class
dating from 1879, now preserved on the Bluebell Railway. Seen here, we think,
at Devons Road (Bow).
