The Shropshire Railway Society was founded in 1969 - 50 years ago. As a major part of the half-century celebrations, we’ve chartered a special train on the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway, formed of “Countess” and the three replica Pickering coaches. The railway’s headquarters are at Llanfair Caereinion, so that’s where we’re starting, for a leisurely run down to Welshpool. Here there’s ample time for an
equally leisurely lunch. Arriving back in Llanfair in the late afternoon, we can take a look around the railway’s workshops, where 0-8-0 “Sir Drefaldwyn” is approaching the reassembly stages of his overhaul, and “The Earl” stands ready for his own refurbishment. After a quick look at the diesels outside the workshop, it’s time to head for home. It’s been an excellent day out (and the weather has been kind to us) - what a great way to celebrate our anniversary!
